Palpation Technique

Palpation is a technique for detecting joint and muscle discomfort using the hands or fingers during a physical examination. Palpation is one of the evaluation methods used to find features of the patient’s body, such as swelling, discomfort, range, and quality of joint mobility.

There are two kinds of palpation methods:

  1. Light – The anomalies on the body’s surface are felt with the fingers.
  2. Deep – utilised to feel lumps and interior organs.

The examination method involves a complete history, range of motion, muscular strength testing, and joint mobility evaluation. Palpation is a psychomotor skill that is included in this process.

Visual Analog Scale (VAS)

A visual analogue scale is a tool that therapists use to gauge a patient’s level of sensitivity to a particular sensation, such as pain. They do this by applying mild to moderate pressure with their thumb to the painful or tender area while watching the patient’s face and comparing their expression to the visual analogue scale before and after treatment.

Typically, the visual analogue scale ranges from 1 (the lowest) to 10 (Maximum). The visual analogue scale score reflects a relative shift in the intensity of the pain experience.

Once a proper diagnosis is made through all these methods, a proper treatment plan is developed based on a thorough examination and knowledge of the patient’s pain and physiological functioning.
